SUMMARY:Illyria Outdoor Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Four pairs of soulmates meet in the Forest of Arden. \nOne pair leap straight into bed. Another pair are dumbstruck by each other’s beauty and pledge their undying troth. The third pair torment each other: he showers chaste love upon her which she haughtily rejects – yet secretly she enjoys the flattery. \nThe fourth pair go further still\, playfully blurring their roles and identities to such an extent that flirting becomes more pain than pleasure\, and love itself is pushed to the limit of its endurance – and beyond. \nJoin us on Sun 19 July for an imaginative re-telling of one of Shakespeare’s wittiest romantic comedies by a 5-strong cast of classically trained professional actors from award-winning Illyria. \nThe Glebe is a magical setting for outdoor theatre. We invite attendees to arrive from 5.00PM why not bring along a pre-performance picnic to be enjoyed overlooking one of the best views in England (and therefore the world…). Bring chairs\, blankets and weather-appropriate clothing (no umbrellas\, though). \nPlease note that the performance will take place whatever the weather (barring dangerous conditions). \nSun 19 July \nThe Glebe\, St Mary’s ChurchTickets: Adults £18; Members £16; Ages 11-18 £10; Age 10 and under FREE. \n.

SUMMARY:Eddie Gripper Band
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Eddie Gripper back to St Mary’s. Last year\, Eddie performed as guest pianist with the Jack Pearce Quintet – if you were lucky enough to attend that concert\, you’ll already appreciate what a virtuouso eddie is! \nThis June\, Eddie joins us with his own jazz band. Touring to support their new Album – Americana – the band will perform original material written after an eye-opening tour of the United States in 2022. \nThe album is\, in fact\, a personal account of Eddie’s six-week journey: living in motels\, camping on roadsides\, and catching lifts with people of every background imaginable. It’s a reflection on the American spirit – the warmth\, optimism\, and generosity of its people – but also a glimpse into a more fractured reality where drugs\, homelessness\, and poverty are ever-present. The pieces on this album capture snapshots of that experience: a broad yet honest reflection of Eddie’s time in America. \n“Eddie Gripper is rapidly establishing a reputation for himself as one of the UK’s most exciting young jazz pianists...” – JAZZWISE \nThu 4 JuneSt Mary’s Church7.30PM (doors open 6.45PM)Tickets £15; Members £12.50 under 18s £8 \nPop-Up Bar.

SUMMARY:Sarah McQuaid in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Having just returned from a successful two-month tour in the USA\, Cornwall-based singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid is touring the UK as she works on her much-anticipate new album. \nSarah McQuaid’s lush\, velvety voice combines with her engaging personality and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars\, keyboards and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience. Her live performances are full of warmth\, wit\, and intimacy\, and have earned her loyal followings on both sides of the Atlantic.  \nFrom contemplative ballads to playful blues and atmospheric instrumentals\, Sarah’s music invites reflection\, connection\, and a deep appreciation of the quiet power of a well-crafted song. \nIn the words of one audience member: “Sarah is a truly impressive artist. Attending her concert feels like diving into a book of short stories — some resonate deeply\, some spark your imagination\, others make you pause and reflect\, and a few bring tears or spontaneous laughter.” \nFri 22 MaySt Mary’s Church7.30PM (doors open 6.45PM)Tickets £15; Members £12.50 under 18s £8 \nPop-Up Bar.

SUMMARY:Science at St Mary's - Dark Science for Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Sophie James as we step into the shadows where technology meets the supernatural. \nFrom the witch hunts of early modern Europe to the rise of digital gothicism\, this special Halloween lecture traces how each new medium revives old anxieties about knowledge\, power\, and control. Moving from witchcraft and modern spiritualism to viral conspiracy theories and algorithmic rituals\, we’ll explore how digital systems of persuasion and visibility echo earlier forms of magic\, manipulation\, and moral panic. \nAre today’s algorithms the new spells? And why does technology — from viral conspiracies to online radicalisation — so often mirror our oldest superstitions? \nTogether\, we’ll consider how horror content\, online radicalisation\, and the viral spread of fear reveal a darker side of our connected world; one that thrives on attention\, emotion\, and the thrill of being afraid. \nExpect a hauntingly creative talk that blends cultural history and a touch of the macabre\, revealing the eerie ways our technologies keep summoning ghosts of the past… \nFREE Entry – no need to bookSuitable for ages 16+Thu 30 Oct 7PMDoors Open 6.30PMPop-up Bar \nNo need to book – just come along on the night!

SUMMARY:Ghost Stories
DESCRIPTION:Two Ghost Stories by M R James\, expertly performed by R M Lloyd Parry. \n‘… Parkins\, who very much dislikes being questioned about it\, did once describe something of it in my hearing\, and I gathered that what he chiefly remembers is a horrible\, an intensely horrible\, face of crumpled linen. What expression he read upon it he could not or would not tell\, but that the fear of it went nigh to maddening him is certain …’ \nOver a century after their first publication\, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. \nOh\, Whistle\, and I’ll Come to You\, My Lad – a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is considered by many to be author’s masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree\, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.Performance lasts approx 100 minutes including interval. \nWARNING: CONTAINS MOMENTS OF PLEASING TERROR \n‘Lloyd Parry was utterly hypnotic\, holding the audience in thrall…’ The Orcadian \nRead an article by Robert Lloyd Parry about the original illustrations for ‘Oh\, Whistle…’ here. \nA filmed performance of “Oh\, Whistle…” and a documentary about the background to the story can be purchased here. \nR L Parry website: https://www.nunkie.co.uk/the-mr-james-project \nTuesday 28 October7.30pm\, doors open at 6.45pmPop-up-barTickets £15 adult; £10 U18; £13.50 membersSuitable for ages 13+

SUMMARY:Maths Behind the Magic: AI\, Codes\, and Digital Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday 24 July for the first in a STEM lecture series in collaboration with Lancaster University. \nThis first talk is for anyone who’s interested in how AI works\, how phones fix a glitchy photo\, or how their data stays safe online. \nThis session lifts the lid on the hidden world of digital magic – powered by maths! Through fun and accessible talks\, you’ll discover how simple ideas shape powerful technologies\, from artificial intelligence to data transmission and encryption. No prior knowledge or maths know-how is needed – just curiosity and a willingness to learn. \nCome and explore the incredible ways maths helps our modern world tick behind the scenes\, then join us for tea and biscuits. \nDr Jess Jay will talk about cryptography and the modern encryption methods that use pure maths to secure our data. Jess will also explore how maths helps us share information securely without ever having to communicate it directly. \nDr Dan Fretwell will take us through A oCmedy of Errosr\, explaining how data can travel across the world without getting lost or damaged and how things like QR codes and CDs still work even when scratched. Expect magic! \nDr Henry Moss gives us the skinny on AI by showing how AI systems learn patterns from large amounts of data and how they can mimic human-like behaviour through basic equations. \nThursday 24 July7.00pmAdmission: FREESuitable for all ages \nNo need to book – just come along on the night!

SUMMARY:Pride & Prejudice
DESCRIPTION:This summer we welcome Illyria once again to our unique outdoor venue with their wonderful and witty alfresco production of Pride & Prejudice.\nAdapted by Oliver Gray from Jane Austen’s novel\, Pride & Prejudice is the original – and best – romcom. Independent-minded Lizzy finds disdainful Mr Darcy detestable! Or does she…? Can she see beyond his pride – and could he overcome her prejudice – to consider a possible future together? Hi-jinks ensue.\n \n\nWith her tongue firmly in her cheek\, Jane Austen tells us “It is a truth universally acknowledged\, that a single man in possession of a good fortune\, must be in want of a wife.” Mrs Bennet certainly thinks so. So when Mr Bingley – single\, young\, handsome\, and with £5000 a year – moves into nearby Netherfield Park\, she devotes all her energy to contriving for Jane\, the eldest of her five daughters\, to meet him during rural Hertfordshire’s whirlwind of social balls. But even Mrs Bennet draws the line at Mr Bingley’s disdainful friend Mr Darcy despite his whopping £10\,000 a year. Thank heavens Lizzy\, her second daughter\, finds him detestable too! Or does she…? Can she see beyond his pride – and could he overcome her prejudice – to consider a possible future together?\n\n \nAward-winning theatre company Illyria returns to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday in sparkling style.\nIf you joined us last year for Illyria’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet\, you’ll appreciate just how special these open-air shows are. We’re particularly blessed here at St Mary’s as our Glebe performance space not only offers a quiet and sheltered spot for picnic and a show but also provides an unparalleled vantage point from which to admire Ruskin’s View.\n \n***The show starts at 6PM but gates open at 5PM for picnicking – it’s the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday\, as afternoon melts into evening and you wander home in the fading light.***\n \nBring a folding chair or blanket as well as a picnic – and please dress for the weather. Last year we had a lovely sunny evening so suncream\, sun hats and insect repellent were the order of the day\, but you might need a fleece and a cagoule!\n \nTickets are limited and last year people travelled from a distance to see Illyria’s performance. This year\, Keswick\, Keighley and Brampton are the next nearest locations to us\, so we’re anticipating high demand. Please book soon so we can organise stewarding\n \n RESERVATIONS

SUMMARY:Miss Nobodies
DESCRIPTION:Miss Nobodies is a funny\, uplifting play about a little ironmongers shop in a little Lancashire town and the larger-than-life women who pass through it from 1919 to the present day. \nMixing storytelling with sketches\, songs and poetry\, Ruth Cockburn and Keith Carter (the creative talent behind last year’s hilarious ‘Devilled Eggs’ show) take you through 100 years of retail therapy and stories; the talkie movies of the ‘20s and the video nasties of the 80’s\, the start of 50’s Skiffle and the birth of 90’s Britpop\, class struggles in the ‘60’s and racial tension in the ‘70’s. \nPlaying a host of characters\, from the tragic to the comical to the lyrical and the animal\, their stories\, sketches\, songs and verse\, (there’s even a prize-winning competition in the interval)\, will have you laughing\, crying and singing up to the present day. \nThis funny\, poignant and heart-warming story will resonate with all ages and will make you think about what the next 100 years will hold for us. Miss Nobodies was inspired by outreach done online and in the community of Great Harwood alongside research into local history and prominent figures of Lancashire. One such person is Ethel Carnie Holdsworth. A writer that worked in the mills in the early part of the last century. She is cited as the first working class\, female novelist in the UK and parts of her poetry are used throughout the play to punctuate the stories. The show mixes poetry\, storytelling and music\, to tell the story of a local shop spanning 100 years from 1919 to present day\, focusing on the women that have made up the shop’s history\, whilst also showing how the lives of women have changed over the last century. \nBlack Liver\, as heard on BBC Radio 4\, seen on BBC 1 and Sky TV have toured all over the world. They bring their unique style of theatre-making and comedy to connect to their audience and bring stories to life. \nQuotesNominated for best new show 2022 Buxton Fringe‘Iconic’ Forgotten Arts Fest‘Highly Recommended’ Buxton FringeAudience Reactions \n‘Miss Nobodies- ordinary women\, living extraordinary lives and superbly told this evening. A privilege to have seen this performance. Thought provoking and enjoyable.’ \n‘Loved the show. It really took us on a humorous and emotive journey. Through a familiar history of any Lancashire small town girl.’ \n‘What a wonderful breath of fresh air.
